Maya had a sleepy tortoise named Tembo. Tembo loved the color orange. He loved orange sunsets, orange carrots, and his soft orange blanket. Every night, Maya tucked Tembo into his little basket. "Goodnight, Tembo," she whispered. One bedtime, a tiny golden light twinkled at the bottom of the garden. Maya tiptoed outside. There, behind the roses, stood a small round door. It was painted bright orange, just like Tembo's favorite sunset. The door had a sign: "Open only at bedtime." Maya's heart went thump-thump. She gently pushed the door.
— 1 —The door opened with a soft whoosh. Inside was a garden that sparkled like orange sherbet. Trees with glowing orange leaves swayed gently. Little fireflies blinked like tiny lanterns. "Welcome, Maya," said a voice. It was a sleepy tortoise, but not Tembo. This tortoise wore a tiny crown. "I am the Keeper of the Bedtime Garden," he said. "Only a child who loves a tortoise can enter. You must help me tuck the garden in for the night." Maya nodded. She felt brave and important.
— 2 —Maya helped the Keeper tuck the flowers into their petals. She pulled a soft orange blanket over a row of sleepy carrots. She sang a lullaby to the fireflies, and they dimmed their lights one by one. "You are a wonderful helper," said the Keeper. "Now, close your eyes and make a wish." Maya wished for sweet dreams for everyone. The Keeper smiled. "Your wish is granted. But first, take this." He gave her a tiny orange seed. "Plant it by your window. It will grow a bedtime star."
— 3 —Maya hurried back through the orange door. She planted the seed by her window. A tiny star popped up, glowing orange and warm. Tembo woke up and blinked. "Did you have an adventure?" his sleepy eyes seemed to ask. Maya smiled and tucked him in again. "Yes, and you were with me," she whispered. She climbed into bed. The star by her window twinkled softly. Maya closed her eyes. The Bedtime Garden would be there tomorrow. And so would Tembo. Goodnight, Maya. Goodnight, Tembo. Goodnight, orange star.
— 4 —Goodnight, Maya ✨
